Marea New York is founded by Spanish-born, Brooklyn-based designer and creative Maria Gordillo. In seeking to produce a sandal with a unique and modern update on a favorite style of sandals originating from South America, it was important to Gordillo to also support ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices. The brand now works with three small-scale women-led factories in Peru; one to create natural dyes for the fabric uppers, a collective of artisans to braid each textile, and a family-run factory to assemble the sandals by hand.
